NXP Semiconductors has unveiled the industry’s first wireless battery management system (BMS) based on ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. This innovative solution is designed to simplify the assembly of electric vehicles (EVs), shorten development times and enable higher battery density. Thanks to UWB technology, voltage and temperature data from the battery cells can be transmitted to the management unit in a stable manner and without cable connections. This eliminates complex cable harnesses and reduces manual work steps. The elimination of plugs and cables also increases the energy density of the battery. Compared to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), UWB uses broadband pulses instead of sinusoidal carrier frequencies. This ensures robust data transmission, even in confined and reflective structures such as battery packs. The solution is part of NXP’s FlexCom portfolio and offers OEMs and suppliers flexibility in choosing between wired and wireless configurations. The new wireless ultra-wideband BMS solution will be available to OEMs from the second quarter of 2025. (oe)
