NXP Semiconductors has unveiled a new automotive processor that combines analog radio reception and AI-powered audio processing in a single-chip solution. The SAF9800 chip is designed to make it easier for automakers to develop modern infotainment systems by integrating several previously separate components into a single chip.

The chip combines AM and FM radio reception with a powerful audio DSP based on the HiFi-5 core, as well as integrated support for neural networks. This enables not only traditional audio functions but also AI-powered applications such as real-time noise cancellation, speech and noise classification, and adaptive speech processing in the vehicle cabin. According to NXP, the processor delivers more than ten times the audio processing performance of previous generations.

Using machine learning algorithms, the processor can specifically isolate voice commands, horn sounds, or mechanical vehicle noises from background noise. This is intended to make voice assistants work more reliably and enable new functions for acoustic vehicle monitoring. Functions and equipment options can be configured or expanded via software without requiring any changes to the hardware.

In addition, the SAF9800 addresses current challenges in radio reception in electric vehicles. NXP supports its new platform with EVAM-lite AM interference suppression technology, which is designed to reduce electromagnetic interference in the AM frequency band. This is driven by both regulatory discussions regarding the preservation of AM radio broadcasting and the increasing EMC requirements for electrified vehicle platforms. (oe)
