With version 0.8, the open-source project Eclipse S-CORE (Safe Open Vehicle Core) has reached another milestone on the path to a safety-certifiable software platform for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The release focuses less on new features and more on the systematic expansion of the quality, architecture, and safety processes required for use in safety-critical automotive applications.
The new version tightens the project-wide quality requirements. Going forward, all software modules intended for Version 1.0 must provide fully documented requirements, verified architectures, and traceable safety artifacts. In this way, Eclipse S-CORE establishes the prerequisites for reproducible development processes and a robust chain of evidence with regard to functional safety.
In addition, governance and integration processes have been further standardized. Changes to the platform now follow a clearly defined review process, while new integration mechanisms ensure that all modules are jointly validated before release. This increases the consistency of the software base and makes it easier for OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to integrate an open, vendor-neutral runtime platform for future vehicle architectures. With this release, Eclipse S-CORE underscores its commitment to providing a trusted open-source foundation for safety-critical, high-performance control units in connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs).
