QNX: Version 8 of the security-certified operating system QOS

The new QOS real-time operating system and the QNX hypervisor are already certified in accordance with the most important safety standards (QHS). The QNX Filesystem for Safety (QFS) is ASIL B certified - further certifications are in progress. © QNX

The eighth generation of the QOS real-time operating system from QNX is pre-certified, ready-to-use basic software that embeds safety and security requirements directly into the end application. This allows users to concentrate fully on the development and certification of differentiating components.

The real-time operating system has been specially developed for the most demanding embedded applications. It complies with global safety standards such as ISO 26262 ASIL-D, IEC 61508 SIL3, IEC 62304 Class C and ISO/SAE 21434 and acts as a certified SEooC (Safety Element out of Context). This enables seamless integration into safety-critical systems as a basic software component – regardless of the final application context. This streamlines certification and shortens time-to-market.

With the latest version QOS 8.0, the microkernel has been expanded to include a future-proof, next-generation architecture. It is designed to enable users to benefit from advances in semiconductor technology and achieve maximum real-time performance.

QOS 8.0 is based on the QNX Software Development Platform 8.0 and offers C/C++ toolchains that are qualified according to ISO 26262 TCL3 and IEC 61508 TL3, as well as important safety artifacts. These rationalize the development and certification of safety- and protection-critical systems.  The operating system is also fully API-compatible with the QNX Neutrino RTOS API.

QNX SDP 8.0 and QOS 8.0 are binary compatible. The migration from QNX SDP 8.0 to QOS 8.0 therefore mainly consists of familiarizing yourself with the information documented in the important security documents, including the security manuals. This will ensure that security best practices have been integrated into the embedded system. (jr)
