ZF LIFETEC: Seat Belts with Infrared Signature

ZF LIFETEC has developed a seat belt with an integrated infrared signature that improves camera-based detection of the correct seat belt position inside the vehicle. The new “Infrared Belt” helps interior cameras reliably detect whether the seat belt is properly positioned across the shoulder and upper body. Series production is scheduled to begin in August 2026.

The solution is based on a specially developed seat belt webbing made of different yarns, whose defined reflective and absorptive properties in the infrared spectrum enable clear identification by corresponding cameras. This allows the seat belt to be reliably detected regardless of clothing, lighting conditions, or the background. Vehicle manufacturers can use this information to detect incorrect usage—such as a seat belt worn under the arm or behind the back—and warn the driver or passengers accordingly.

This development is gaining importance against the backdrop of new regulatory requirements. Starting in July 2026, the European Union will require camera-based driver monitoring systems in new vehicle models. At the same time, as part of its Vision 2030, Euro NCAP is tightening its requirements for occupant monitoring and will place greater emphasis in future evaluations on the actual protective effectiveness of restraint systems. The company plans to present the technology at the AIRBAG 2026 conference in Mannheim this December. (oe)
